500 Books before Junior High

Camarena Memorial Library invites children in Kinder through 6th grade to sign-up for the 500 Books before Junior High program.

WHY 500 BOOKS BEFORE JUNIOR HIGH?
The acquisition of reading skills is important to school success. Reading and/or listening to books allows children to improve their communication and language skills. In addition, reading is fun and encourages children to open up their imagination by traveling through stories to other countries, eras, continents or by learning about someone important in history.

WHO CAN SIGN-UP FOR THIS PROGRAM?
Any child in Kinder through 6th grade. Completion will take from a few months to a few years, depending how often your child reads.

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?
-Sign-up at Camarena Memorial Library
-Get/renew your child's library card
-Your child will receive a reading log to keep track of the books read
-Pick books according to the child's reading level or above it
-Record each book read. Variety is key! ONLY RECORD EACH TITLE ONCE. We want kids to learn new words to build their vocabulary repertoire.
-Each time your child reads 50 books, bring in the reading log and your child will receive a prize and a new reading log.
-Your child may read/listen to books from the library or any of its online resources such as BookFLIX, Hoopla, TumbleMATH or Libby
-After reading 500 different books, your child will receive a certificate of achievements and an invitation to a graduation party
